「お遍路さんがゆく」の小野まりさんに聞く Life in the UK 体験記 本誌に連載中のコラム「お遍路さんがゆく」において、夫で画家の小野琢正さんが描く水彩画と一緒に、本文執筆を担当していただいている小野まりさん。今年6月に 「Life in the UK」を受験し、1回目で見事合格したという小野さんに同試験について聞いてみた。 なぜ永住権を取得しようと思ったのですか。 仕事、そして子供の教育の基盤を英国で築きつつあったので、今後も英国で安心して暮らすために永住権を取得することが必要だと考えました。 試験勉強は、どのくらいの期間をかけて、どのようなことを行いましたか。 1カ月ぐらいです。公認テキストの読破と問題集、そしてインターネットの模擬試験練習を活用しました。 一番難しい、また簡単だと感じた設問ジャンルを教えてください。 難しかったのが政治ジャンル。簡単だったのはChildren, family and young peopleに関する一般常識ジャンル。教育、健康、税金などは生活体験者にとっては「常識」の範囲内のものがあり、助かりました。 当日の会場の雰囲気や受験者層を教えてください。 試験官が2名いらしたのですが、2人とも冗談を言って、受験者たちをリラックスさせていました。受験者は定員10名程。アフリカ系、インド系、アジア系など国際色豊かな人種が揃っていました。年齢は30～40代が中心だったと思います。 「合格」を知ったのは、どのような状況でしたか。またその時の素直な感想をお知らせください。 試験を終えた瞬間に、それまで試験の解答を入力していた PC画面上に結果が出て来るようになっているんです。たぶん10秒とかからなかったと思いますが、その間はもうドキドキでした。目の前の画面に「PASS」の文字が出てきた時は、心の底から安堵しました。
